SEDITION 2019 EDITION
Sedition 2019 celebrated public art and protest of the 1970s. The festival was focused on the Sydney underground of the 1970s and the huge creative wave that broke during those years.
In 2019 Sedition created exciting partnerships between the Power Institute, City of Sydney, the State Library of NSW, the Oxford Arts Factory, the National Art School and Brand X Productions.
The 2019 multi-venue fest included
Sedition: Paper Tigers, an art exhibition at the National Art School featuring almost 200 works and Sedition: ‘The Art of Agitation’ an art exhibition at the State Library of New South Wales; music events at the Oxford Arts Factory and the National Art School and a major music event to be announced, a film season and a series of round table conversations that will recast the cultural history of Sydney. Discussions were held at the State Library of New South Wales, the University of Sydney and the National Art School.
The vision behind Sedition Festival, is that art incites action; whether that be protests about women's rights or land rights or the creation of a film culture in Australia or an innovative, cathartic music scene and the poster art and ephemera that is its legacy.
Some of the artists who appeared in the 2019 show include: Brett Whiteley, Martin Sharp, Garry Shead, Peter Kingston, Paul Worstead, The Tin Sheds Collective, Michael Callaghan, Reg Mombassa, Therese Kenyon, Marie McMahon, Michael Matou, Toby Zoates and Jan MacKay. Our conversations included significant film makers, poster makers, political activists and theatre practitioners that defined this cultural upheaval. Johnny Allen coordinated a cabaret season to take place at the State Library of NSW that included the legendary absurdist troupe Funny Stories as well as burlesque legend Elizabeth Burton and a contemporary burlesque performance coordinated by Vashti Hughes and Tim Hansen. The music events featured amongst others The Aints!, Shy Impostors, Flaming Hands and Dog Trumpet.
